Winter In Eagle Valley

The winter months at the reservoir really begin to get cold right around Christmas.  It is not unusual for the temps to hit zero and below zero.  The reservoir begins to freeze over solidly by the early part of January.  The  ice gets up to 20 inches thick.  You can drive a vehicle on the ice but it is not permitted by Nevada Division of State Parks.

Some of the bigger trout that have been caught at Eagle Valley Reservoir are harvested ice fishing.  Two years ago a 7lb rainbow and an 8lb brown were caught in January thru the ice.  Big Fish Boat Rentals has been considering renting out ice houses and augers, but due to the fact that the ice fishing season is so short I have all but dropped that idea.  Never know maybe next year.

Boat Rentals usually stop  at the end of November.  I have rented out the pontoon with an inch of snow on the deck to some people from Minnesota who moved to Vegas.  I stoped at the bar at Eagle Valley Resort and the people in the bar were amazed that I had rented out the boat in the snow.  We begin cutting firewood to sell to my 100 plus  customers in Vegas who buy Pine and Cedar by the cord.  Uaually around the first week in march I start to get the boats and motors ready for the summer.  Reservations begin to come in for the holidays.

I feel that I have one of the best jobs in the world.  Of course I love the outdoors and talking to people about fishing , hunting and camping.  I can’t think of anything more fun than packing a  lunch and going up in the hills and cutting some firewood for our house or for sale.  It’s very labor intensive but the exercise is beneficial and the secenary is breathtaking.  I am very fortunate you see I talked about starting this business while I was running a bar in Vegas and because of my drinking I could never get it off the ground or past the talking stage.  It was  only after I quit the bar and stopped drinking that I was able to realize my dream.  Many of my old friends are dead  because of drugs and alcohol. I mannaged to stop and probably save my life in the process.  I  don’t know how many of you have their lives touched by alcohol and drugs.  Directly or indirectly by one or more family members,  the use of drugs and alcohol have influenced many of our lives.  If any of you are interested in discussing this subject please don’t hesitate to write me and I will be more that happy to share my experiences and how I stopped with you.  This subject if ignored can ruin our lives or the  lives of  our loved ones.I have written a book on Drugs and Alcohol which is titled “Drinking and Drugging, Disease my Ass”  which is my story of getting sober after almost 40 years. It would be good for anyone around alcohol and drugs to read and it can be purchased for $2.99
